Sandy Creek Energy Station

Sandy Creek Energy Station - Riesel, TX

Rising taller than India’s Taj Mahal and London’s Big Ben’s clock tower, the concrete chimney at Sandy Creek Energy Station stands at an impressive 360 feet. The Kiewit team poured more than 2,000 cubic yards of concrete, the equivalent of a 9-mile stretch of sidewalk, to slipform the tallest structure in McLennan County, Texas in less than 30 days.

The scope of work included detailed engineering and self-performed erection of a single carbon steel flue gas liner and two ductwork penetrations for the chimney addition. The 900-megawatt coal-fired power plant with one IHI supercritical pulverized coal boiler, one Toshiba steam turbine generator and Alstom air-quality control systems equipment, is one of the largest new coal projects in the U. S. and is expected to generate electricity for more than 900,000 Texas homes and businesses.
